All Buildings are beautiful – Film and audience discussion
The demolition of the Old University of Economics on the Althangrund in Vienna could become the largest demolition and redevelopment project of the decade in Vienna. An ageing university complex is to make way for a new, sustainable educational campus. This careless treatment of the building fabric and the ‘grey energy’ embodied in the structure is emblematic of an era in which, despite an accelerating climate crisis, we cling to concepts from the past. To make ‘All Buildings Are Beautiful’, Christoph Schwarz spent the last year the building was accessible to him as a temporary occupant. Slow camera movements allow the viewer to experience the spaces, whilst Suse Lichtenberger’s voice-over tells the stories of people campaigning to preserve the building. As in “Die beste Stadt ist keine Stadt” (Austrian Short Film Award 2021), Christoph Schwarz combines personal experiences and a documentary search for clues with climate-driven criticism of growth to create a film essay that is both humorous and poignant.
